Warkworth Tourist Information

The ancient village of Warkworth is a mile from the North Sea, on the stunning Northumberland north-east coastline. Near to this very pretty town is Alnwick Castle - which has recently achieved fame as the home of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films. It is also only fourteen miles from the county town of Morpeth.

Warkworth stands out amongst the elite of tourist destinations due to its natural unspoilt surroundings which include a mid 12th century mote and bailey castle, a 14th century chapel, a Norman bridge and the hermitage. The Main Street retains a selection of quaint shops, traditional pubs and restaurants serving up a delicious array of tasty country cuisine. Perfect after a busy day of sightseeing!

A tranquil half-mile stroll up the north river bank will lead you to The Hermitage, the site of a reclusive holy man in medieval times, which may be of interest to historians, geologists, architects and tourists. The unusual architecture is concealed by woodland and carved into a gigantic sandstone rock, containing a chapel, dormitory and confessional area. This important religious site can only be accessed by boat so upon arrival, ring the bell and a ferryman will happily row across to pick you up and transport you to this wonderful cave.

There are many recreational activities available within the area. You can hire a canoe or rowing boat and sail up the lazy river, with only the sound of gentle breeze and birdsong to disturb the silence. Alternatively take a twenty minute walk to the beach with views of Coquet Islands RSPB reserve, or enjoy a round of golf at the local golf course. Cycling routes are dotted all round Northumberland and Warkworth is no exception. Cyclists can push their limits on an 18-mile trek around Guyzance, Acklington and Broomhil, and returning via Amble. This pure adrenaline challenge recently featured in Sustrans Cycle Northumberland guide; however there is a shorter and equally enjoyable 11 mile route for those who prefer a gentler outing.

Warkworth Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty is full of cultural attractions and great amenities to suit all people’s pockets and tourist tastes.
