Consett Tourist Information

Positioned on the eastern bank of the River Derwent on the edge of the Pennines, Consett is a charismatic, vibrant little country town with plenty of personality. Rich in coal, iron ore and limestone, Consett flourished during the Industrial Revolution to become a town with a thriving lead mining and steel industry.

Aside from its rich industrial heritage, Consett also holds appeal for visitors due to its setting amongst spectacularly beautiful country and its position close to the head of the Derwent Reservoir. Particularly popular amongst walkers and cyclists, the town is known for the Consett to Sunderland Railway Path, a designated cycle route using old railway lines, stretching for over twenty miles. Walkers would also be thrilled by the Derwent Walk at Shotley Bridge, where one can follow a scenic meandering path amongst luxuriant greenery, making one feel like part of nature itself.

For that essential family picnic in the sun, why not stop by Carricks Picnic Area, a small stretch of grass alongside the River Derwent that is popular with local picnickers, or Allensford Country Park, a larger riverside park with a shop and playground offering wonderful views of the valley.

The culture vultures amongst us will not be disappointed by Consett’s rural setting either, as Consett boasts its very own Glass and Art Gallery that showcases a broad range of art pieces from over a hundred artists around the region. The Empire Theatre, one of County Durham’s most historic theatre complexes, hosts many touring and local productions, and also regularly screens local and international films, so visitors will never be in want of entertainment.

The birth-town of national celebrities such as Rowan Atkinson and Paul Collingwood, this lovely riverside town is the perfect destination for a relaxing family weekend away in the countryside.

Interesting fact:
Consett Salvation Army Corps was honoured for forming the first ever Corps Band, performing for the first time on Christmas 1879 with just four band members.
